SANTA MONICA, Calif. — Edmunds.com, the premier online resource for automotive information, noted today that October may officially be the turning point for the automotive model year.

In October, 2012 model year vehicles made up 52.3 percent of new car sales; in September the figure was only 35 percent. Chrysler and Honda were among the brands that practically doubled their 2012 sales penetration from September levels, while Toyota more than tripled its 2012 share this month.

As a result, average industry incentive spending decreased in October, since the newer model year vehicles are hardly discounted compared to the 2011 models.

On average, automakers spent an average of $2,158 on vehicle incentives per vehicle sold in October, said Edmunds.com, down 12.1 percent from September and down 11.5 percent from October 2010.

Edmunds.com analysts determined that 2011 model year incentives are essentially flat from September, while 2012 model year incentives climbed a slight five percent.

“The ‘days to turn’ rate, which counts the days a car is on the dealership lot before it is sold, is at the lowest point we have on record,” said Jessica Caldwell, senior analyst at Edmunds.com. “Production is a lot leaner for the domestics these days, while Honda and Toyota are still rebuilding inventory after the earthquake.”

Edmunds.com’s monthly True Cost of IncentivesSM (TCISM) report takes into account all automakers’ various U.S. incentives programs, including subvented interest rates and lease programs, as well as cash rebates to consumers and dealers. To ensure the greatest possible accuracy, Edmunds.com bases its calculations on sales volume, including the mix of vehicle makes and models for each month, as well as on the proportion of vehicles for which each type of incentive was used.

Reliability Perceptions are Changing – Not Good for Toyota

It’s no secret that auto manufacturers are creating better vehicles than ever before – safer, more feature-rich, higher quality, and more reliable. Data from J. D. Power and Associate’s Vehicle Dependability Study, which surveys owners of three-year-old vehicles regarding the number of problems experienced in the prior twelve months, backs the assertion of improved reliability.

As illustrated below, these five high-volume brands have each dramatically reduced their problem incidence since 2005. In fact, Ford’s is now nearly on par with long-time industry leaders Honda and Toyota.

NOTE: article written by J. D. Power and Associate’s Amit Aggarwal

But consumer sentiment is often divorced from reality. The domestic brands continue to carry poor reliability perceptions borne out of decades of actual poor performance. The 2010 Avoider Study, which examines the reasons consumers fail to consider (i.e. avoid) particular new models, shows that Chrysler, Chevrolet, and Ford are all avoided by greater than 20% of vehicle buyers because of reliability concerns. The latter two have made inroads (carried at least partly by better actual performance) and decreased their reliability avoidance by three and seven percentage points, respectively, over the past six years. Meanwhile, Chrysler’s reliability avoidance continues to worsen.

The Toyota and Honda corporations have long enjoyed stellar reputations for reliability.

For Acura and Honda, those perceptions have remained remarkably steady for the past six years, never rising above 7% avoidance.

Conversely, the steady drum of recalls and poor PR has negatively impacted Toyota and Lexus, with 15% and 6% of avoiders, respectively, citing reliability concerns. Interestingly, corporate sibling Scion, which has largely avoided the fallout, actually experienced an improved reliability perception in 2010.

The Toyota saga illustrates how quickly brand reputations – even those which have been painstakingly crafted over years – can turn.

Mercedes-Benz went through a similarly painful period ten years ago, when the Chrysler takeover and new product launches created numerous vehicle reliability issues. It has taken the company the remaining part of the decade to recover its once sterling image.

Toyota Motor Corporation must continue its redoubled efforts to produce great products and earn back its position as a reliability leader.

Hyundai Ousts Honda, Toyota to Take No. 1 Spot for Brand Loyalty

IRVINE, Calif. — Kelley Blue Book’s www.kbb.com, the leading provider of new car and used car information, today announces that Hyundai has ousted traditional mainstays Honda and Toyota to take the No. 1 spot in brand loyalty on kbb.com for Q2 2011. While Hyundai took the top spot in loyalty in February 2010, this marks the first time since kbb.com began tracking this data that Hyundai has held the No. 1 spot for an entire quarter.

Automotive shoppers’ loyalty to their respective brands has waned during the past year for the majority of vehicle makes, due to the economic downturn and consumers becoming much more aware of issues such as fuel prices, safety recalls, available vehicle options and additional models within their intended price points.

While many of the auto industry’s top players have found themselves struggling to retain customers, Hyundai has blazed a new trail and preserved its loyal consumer base. The driving factors behind this retention have been aggressive marketing campaigns combined with innovative product redesigns like the highly successful 2011 Sonata and 2011 Elantra.

For Q2 2011, Hyundai’s brand loyalty was at 52.3 percent, with Honda following at 49.7 percent and Toyota sliding in third at 47.7 percent. Rounding out the top five for Q2 2011 are Ford in the fourth spot at 45.4 percent, and Subaru in fifth at 44.8 percent.

In a time when most brands are losing loyalty, it is notable that fellow Korean automaker Kia also is bucking the trend. Kia is one of only two brands that are up in brand loyalty year-over-year, with the other being Mini. Both Kia and Mini are succeeding in loyalty for reasons similar to Hyundai, with a combined result of attractive redesigns and additional models within their respective lineups, as well as aggressive marketing campaigns.

“Hyundai’s product renaissance is benefitting the company not just by attracting an all-new customer base, but by helping them to retain current loyal Hyundai owners, as well,” said Arthur Henry, market intelligence manager for Kelley Blue Book. “This latest brand loyalty analysis from kbb.com is a testament to the power of attractive vehicle designs and intriguing marketing in the minds of in-market car shoppers as they consider their next vehicle.”

Furthermore, several luxury brands, which have eroded in loyalty over the past few years, have now risen in loyalty for Q2 2011, as well. April and May of this year saw some positive economic signals (such as a sharp drop in gas prices), and as a result, Kelley Blue Book Market Intelligence sees prior luxury owners shifting back to the luxury brands they enjoyed when the economy was booming. This is a positive sign for luxury brands such as Mercedes-Benz, Audi and BMW, all of which saw quarter-over-quarter increases for Q2 2011 versus Q1 2011, yet all remain down year-over-year.

Kelley Blue Book Market Intelligence examines brand loyalty while consumers are still in the shopping phase. For this analysis, loyalty is defined as owners of the brand who are currently shopping the same brand for their next vehicle. This includes data from consumers who view a trade-in page or private party page in addition to a new-car page on Kelley Blue Book’s kbb.com.

COSTA MESA, Calif. — Top Recommended Current New Car Buys From Acura, Dodge, GMC, Hyundai and Toyota, Based On Depreciation Value, Current Incentives, Warranty and Features.

News Highlights

NADAguides, the leading vehicle pricing and information provider on the Internet today, announces its 2011 Second Quarter Car Buyers Market Report – six current models from Acura, Dodge, GMC, Hyundai and Toyota earn placement within NADAguides Top Recommended Current Buys report.

In light of a slowly recovering economy, current fuel prices and strains on some vehicle availability from Japanese manufacturers, NADAguides’ analysts recommend this select set of new cars that, based upon specific criteria important to new car shoppers, are excellent options during a time when many uncontrollable market factors are affecting car-buying decisions.

The NADAguides Top Recommended Current Buys includes six vehicles that are competitively priced, offer incentives and rebates or other features that add value to the vehicle, offer a very low first-year depreciation rate and maintain their value better than others long-term. Additionally, NADAguides reviewed the current dealer availability (days-supply) of these vehicles to ensure each had sustainable dealer inventory currently on lots.

The following six vehicles make up the Top Recommended Current Buys in the 2011 Second Quarter NADAguides Car Buyers Market Report: the 2011 Acura TL, 2011 Dodge Challenger R/T, 2011 GMC Terrain SLE-2, 2011 Hyundai Azera Limited, 2011 Toyota Tacoma Double Cab V6 Manual, and the 2011 Toyota Venza I4 AWD.

Key Quotes

Troy Snyder, director of product development at NADAguides: “The results of our most recent Car Buyer’s Market Report show a healthy mix from diverse manufacturers across several segments. There are numerous factors influencing car shoppers today and in some cases, car research and purchasing a vehicle has become unattractive to consumers. The Car Buyer’s Market Report is intended to sort through the clutter and provide car shoppers with a clear view of the best vehicles for the money that are currently available at local lots. Lower incentives and mixed economic news have stinted new car sales in recent months, but rest assured, there are deals currently available at local lots on some phenomenal vehicles and we have the list.”

Less than two years out of bankruptcy, GM has a shot to reclaim world sales title.

FLINT, Mich. (AP) — General Motors has a shot at being No. 1 again.

The resurgent automaker reported Monday that its worldwide sales last year came within 30,000 of beating Japanese rival Toyota, which took a big hit because of safety recalls.

GM is hiring, producing more and basking in a better reputation for quality. It expects to sell even more cars and trucks this year, putting it within reach of the title of biggest in the world — an honor it held for 76 years before losing it in 2008.

Regaining the global lead means a lot to workers on the assembly line in Flint, a town devastated by years of auto industry job losses. Just two years ago, they didn’t know if their factory or even their company would survive.

Dana Rouse, a union official at the pickup truck factory here, called overtaking Toyota the Heisman Trophy of the auto business.

“We’re going to take Toyota on, and the people in Flint are going to be a part of that,” he said. “This is the birthplace of General Motors. We kind of take it a little more seriously than maybe some other towns.”

GM executives say they are focused on keeping customers happy, not on the title. They remember the company’s disastrous recent history, when it sold cars at a loss just to hold on to market share.

“Satisfying and retaining our customers and delivering world-class products is pretty much the fundamental business that we’re in,” GM North America President Mark Reuss said Monday at the factory. “The rest of it may come, may not.”

Now GM is outselling Toyota in fast-growing China, and its U.S. business is bouncing back. To overtake Toyota, it needs a sales increase of half a percentage point, about the number of Chevy Silverado pickup trucks it sells per month in the U.S.

Toyota is still wounded from recalls of more than 10 million vehicles, mainly to fix gas pedals and floor mats that could make cars speed out of control. It was the only major automaker with lower U.S. sales in December, and it’s uncertain when sales will recover.

Toyota said it was not concerned with beating GM.

“Our objective is to become No. 1 with the customers,” spokesman Paul Nolasco said.

Dethroning Toyota, experts say, might also help GM with marketing, even if it adds little value to the business. Their advice: GM, which has shed four of its weaker brands in recent years, should focus not on size but on making money.

“The game plan has changed enormously,” said Howard Wheeldon, senior strategist with BGC Partners in London. “Its future is not to be all things to all men in every part of the world. Its concentration is now related to the ability to make profits.”

And taking the lead by growing too fast can be bad. Fast growth brought global leadership but ultimately cost Toyota, which has admitted it lost focus on quality as it overtook GM for the global sales lead.

Toyota sold 8.42 million vehicles worldwide in 2010, barely ahead of GM’s 8.39 million. GM made an impressive turnaround from 2009, when it was forced to take nearly $50 billion in government help and go through bankruptcy.

GM’s global sales grew by a dramatic 12 percent last year, and it turned a $4.2 billion profit in the first nine months of the year. Financial results for the final three months of 2010 aren’t in yet, but more profit is expected.

Along the way, GM pulled off an initial public stock offering and added 9,000 U.S. workers. GM’s sales in China were so strong that they outpaced the U.S. for the first time in the company’s 102-year history.

The federal government still owns about a third of the company and is gradually selling its GM stock on the open market.

So far, GM has stuck to its game plan. It has limited rebates and low-interest financing, and it’s made money selling new models, such as the Chevrolet Equinox small SUV and Buick LaCrosse luxury sedan. Analysts say there’s no reason to change now.

“At the end of the day you can accomplish that goal of beating Toyota without having to focus on market share,” said David Whiston, an auto analyst with investment firm Morningstar. “If you focus on great product, the market share takes care of itself.”

On Monday, GM recalled 750 laid-off workers for a third shift at the Flint assembly plant because of strong demand for the heavy-duty pickup trucks made there. The trucks are used mainly for construction, plowing snow and other work, and the increased demand is a sign of economic recovery. Other production increases could be coming, but GM won’t go overboard by reopening closed pickup factories, Reuss said.

AP Business Writer Carlo Piovano contributed to this report from London.
