Winterkorn: 500,000 employees by end of 2012 is possible.

FRANKFURT (Reuters) — Volkswagen is looking to increase its global staff by more than 10 percent next year, CEO Martin Winterkorn told a German newspaper.

Winterkorn, in an interview published Sunday by newspaper Bild am Sonntag, said it was possible for the group to have 500,000 employees by the end of 2012, up from 449,000 currently.

German premium-car makers BMW and Daimler, for their part, struck a more cautious note, saying their headcount next year would depend on the business development, the paper said, citing BMW CEO Norbert Reithofer and his Daimler counterpart Dieter Zetsche.

VW has been aggressively expanding globally under Winterkorn’s leadership.

Winterkorn told Automotive News Europe in September that VW wants to cut costs and boost profits further as part of its mission to rise to the top of the automotive world by 2018 with global vehicle sales of more than 10 million units and a profit margin of more than 8 percent.

“We are not just increasing volume but cost effectiveness as well,” Winterkorn said.

He said that capital investments should not exceed the current 6 percent share of revenue and the share for r&d should not exceed the current figure of 4 percent. “We are completely on track on both figures,” Winterkorn said in an interview.

A key to reaching the financial goals will be maximizing VW Group’s modular car-production system.

“You are no longer competitive in the auto industry without such a strategy. Our modular approach reduces costs, production and development time and makes possible an even greater variety of models and technologies,” Winterkorn said.

“For example, the modular transverse platform reduces one-time and unit costs by 20 percent. The production time per vehicle decreases by about 30 percent, to say nothing of the significant reductions in weight and emissions.”

Volkswagen expects profitable U.S. sales this year for the first time since 2003, its U.S. CEO said today, despite an analyst’s warnings that the auto industry must stimulate U.S. demand or risk recession-level sales for several years.

Volkswagen’s Audi-brand sales made money last year in the U.S., Volkswagen of America CEO Jonathan Browning told the Society of Automotive Analysts, and all of Volkswagen should follow this year. The German automaker hopes all of its U.S. operations, including its new factory in Tennessee, will be profitable by 2013, a rarity in the company’s history in this country.

The automaker is planning for the U.S. light-vehicle market to improve to 13.5 million or 14 million sales next year, Browning said, compared with 16 million-plus before 2008. But sales are currently running at an annual pace of 12 million to 13 million, largely because of a decline in the number of cars per driver, said Itay Michaeli, vice president at Citi Investment Research.

So-called “vehicle density” declined during the recession. While Americans still want to own the number of cars they did in the past decade – for instance, having two cars for each family – the economy and the job market has made them reticent to buy, Michaeli said.

“Many people are just simply too afraid of the uncertainty,” he said. Michaeli advocated more use of job-protection incentives such as the original Hyundai Assurance program to give consumers reasons to buy. Otherwise, consumers, especially young ones, may get used to having fewer cars. That trend could last for several years, he said.

With worries about March’s devastating earthquake in Japan becoming a distant memory, Honda’s factories are almost all running full speed ahead – but its sales haven’t taken off in quite the same way.

Honda sales were down 28 percent last month even though dealership inventory levels are improving and its North American factories are churning out cars as quickly as they can.

“We’ve been going wide open … even adding some overtime on Saturdays, trying to catch up,” said Mark Morrison, a spokesman for Honda’s Lincoln, Alabama, plant told the Anniston Star.

Honda builds its Pilot crossover (pictured), Ridgeline pickup and Odyssey vans in Alabama. Pilot sales were up 11 percent last month, but Odyssey and Ridgeline sales were down 18 and 86 percent, respectively.

Analysts say that increasingly products offered by other automakers have drawn would-be Honda buyers into competitor showrooms when dealership inventories – and manufacturer-backed deals – were weak.

“As they [Honda] start to lose market share, that is a worry,” Edmunds analyst Bill Visnic said. “There are people who have been loyal to Honda, but have not found what they want and so may go somewhere else. In the automotive industry, if you lose a buyer, it’s very hard to get that buyer back.”

Honda has never offered big incentives, but it still cut dealership spending over the summer because of its low inventory levels.

Nashua Car Dealers adds: ” With many Honda dealership lots still not up to inventory standards they are accustom to how can Honda not decide to build some worthwhile incentives into a program to lift sales. While many loyal and devoted Honda customers will wait it out many buyers faced with a choice are turning to competitive models like Volkswagen.”

Hyundai Motor America has announced an all-time sales record for both the month of June and in the first half of the year.

Hyundai sold 59,209 vehicles in June. Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama, located in southern Montgomery, is the primary producer of Elantras and Sonatas in the United States. The cars make up nearly 65 percent of Hyundai Motor America’s sales.

The June sales were a 16-percent increase from the same period a year ago.

It came as a small surprise that the first half of the year set a sales record since June also marked the sixth consecutive month that Hyundai has set an all-time monthly sales record. Overall, sales are up 26 percent from last year.

Dave Zuchowski, Hyundai Motor America’s executive vice president of national sales, attributes the success to not only the attractiveness of the vehicles, but their fuel-efficiency. He said he believes the company’s success will continue throughout the year.

“We are confident going into the third quarter that the company is on track for its best year ever,” Zuchowski said in a news release issued by the company.

John Krafcik, who is president and CEO of Hyundai Motor America, agreed that the fuel-efficient vehicles Hyundai produces are what Americans want and need in a car.

“The best way to reduce America’s fuel consumption is to put more fuel-efficient vehicles in American driveways, right now,” Krafcik said in the written statement. “The best way to do that is to mass produce the most efficient technologies … and deploy them as standard equipment, not expensive options.”

As demand for the most popular Hyundai cars, the Sonata and Elantra, increases, production at the Montgomery Hyundai plant attempts to keep up. The plant operates on a five-day-a-week schedule with two 10-hour shifts each day. One Saturday production day is also included each month.

There is no plan to increase or decrease production, according to Robert Burns, local Hyundai spokesman, “At this time, we are going to stay with what we’ve been doing so far,” Burns said, adding there have been no discussions about adding additional Saturdays to the schedule.

Burns said that the Hyundai Motor Manufacturing of Alabama plant has been running at capacity in an effort to keep up with consumer demand.

“At least 50 percent of the Elantras come from Korea,” Burns said.

Year-to-date, HMMA production is up 13.2 percent from 2010. Based on projected production days left, the plant will likely achieve 330,000 units by the end of the year.

Believe it!  According to Barrett-Jackson, a 1963 VW Samba Microbus went for $217,800 after the buyer’s fee. The soaring selling price was undoubtedly a surprise, but the gorgeous mouse-grey-and-pearl-white bus is first-generation and restored to better-than-new condition. It has a German mohair headliner, all original latches, handles and ashtrays, and this particular ’63 model just won the best bus award at the VW Classic event.
